HSBC’s online banking and app went down today leaving thousands of customers unable to access their accounts.

According to the website DownDetector, more than 6,000 people reported issues with their HSBC accounts this morning. The site reported that 67% had issues with their mobile banking, and 20% with logging into their mobile account. HSBC’s sister bank First Direct was not affected by the outage.

The problems appear to have begun at around 8:20 this morning and they continued throughout the day. HSBC confirmed that the issue was fixed on Friday afternoon with the problem with logging into online bank accounts having been fixed around lunchtime. HSBC says the problems were caused by an “internal technical error”. While the wider payment problems were down to a technical issue with a third-party provider.

An HSBC UK spokesperson: “Earlier issues with HSBC UK’s online and mobile banking services, as well as a separate payments issue affecting multiple banks, are now fixed. We’re really sorry to our customers who were impacted, and we continue to monitor systems closely. “

HSBC confirmed the problems in a post to X – formerly Twitter – post this morning. HSBC said: “We’re really sorry that some customers are having issues accessing personal online and mobile banking. Our IT teams are working hard to get these services back to normal. You can still authorise online card purchases via SMS.”

Many HSBC customers took the social media on Friday morning to share their frustration. One customer said: “@HSBC_UK your app service is not working, it states service unavailable and multiple people have reported it.” Another said: “Hi @HSBC_UK is the app working today? I can’t access my accounts, says the service is unavailable! It’s payday so I have bills to pay and I cannot log in!”

A third added: “The rage on Twitter because the HSBC app is down on payday. I’ll pay my bills in a couple of hours when it’s no doubt back up. People get so angry about the wrong things.”

A fourth said: ” I don’t typically complain about hsbc (big fat lie) but this is really doing my head in. For years i’ve debated moving banks and honestly this might be my final straw. the fact so many people have been screwed over by this bank countless times is embarrassing!”
