Halifax bank near Cambridgeshire border becomes latest branch to shut doors to customers

Halifax has announced that one of its branches near Cambridgeshire will be closing next month. The bank, located in Saffron Walden in Essex, is the most recent closure confirmed by the company.

The closure comes as many banks across the UK have shut branches due to a rapid decline in footfall and in-person visits. In Cambridgeshire, a number of branches are due to close or have already closed within the last year.

The Saffron Walden branch, on King Street, will shut its doors for good on June 26. Once closed, the nearest Halifax banks available to customers will be the ones in Bishop’s Stortford and Cambridge Petty Cury.

A spokesperson for Halifax said: “Before we close any branch, we look at how our customers are managing their money and using the branch. Most customers are now using our mobile app, internet banking or calling us instead, which means they are using branches, including the Saffron Walden branch much less.

“After the branch closes, our Community Banker will be available to support you in the local area one day a week. We’ll update our website with details of where and when you can find them, nearer to the branch closure date.”

The bank found that 231 customers used the branch regularly in 12 months to November 2023. It also stated that 79 per cent of customers used other Halifax banks and online banking.
