Four savvy ways to enjoy a summer festival without breaking the bank

WITH fantastic music and an electric atmosphere, there’s something magical about heading to a festival.

But partying in the great outdoors can be seriously pricey.

Here’s how to enjoy a summer festival without breaking the bank . . .

VOLUNTEER: Go to some of the biggest festivals for free as a volunteer for a charity.

You will usually be assigned a job — or get to pick one — such as providing directions or checking wristbands.

During breaks you can then watch the acts.

You can go to most big festivals, including Boardmasters, Glastonbury and Latitude, as a volunteer for Oxfam.

See festivals.oxfam.org.uk.

Or My Cause UK partners with a number of different charities and festivals.

Applications are currently open for British Summer Time at Hyde Park and Secret Garden Party in Cambs.

See mycauseUK.com/volunteer.

BYOF: Cut the costs of attending a festival by bringing your own food — and drink, if allowed.

Plan carefully and bring food that is light and won’t spoil if temperatures are high.

PUT A LID ON IT: If you are planning to buy drinks on site, it can be worth taking a couple of bottle lids as many events remove them when serving.

Without a lid you may guzzle faster and are more likely to spill it.

Also look out for on-site recycling schemes, where you can earn free drinks by collecting a certain amount of plastic glasses.

FREE FOR ALL: There are many local festivals running across the UK that are free or cost considerably less than those with big headline acts.

These local events still have loads of atmosphere and are usually a great day out.

For example, Notting Hill carnival in London or The Birmingham Jazz & Blues festival are both free.

There is a list of free festivals, filtered by region, at moneysavingexpert.com/deals/free-uk-festivals.
