EU clears the way for Irish bank payouts to go ahead after financial market turmoil


Plans by Irish banks to give shareholders hundreds of millions in cash this year appear secure after Europe’s top banking supervisor said he would not ban dividends despite signs of crisis in the sector.

ndrea Enria, the chair of the European Central Bank’s supervisory board, told the European Parliament economic affairs committee that there would be no blanket ban on payouts similar to the one imposed at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.
