The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed a change to Universal Credit payments and other benefits this month. This will affect millions of claimants across the UK.
The changes come in due to the August bank holiday which will see the date many receive their money moved forward. This is similar to changes which took place earlier in May as well as the bank holiday given for King Charles ‘ coronation on May 8.
The UK will have a bank holiday on Monday, August 28 and it means benefit payment dates will be brought forward for some. However, this may mean they will have to wait longer for their benefits as a result.

When to expect the payment
The upcoming Bank Holiday that falls on Monday, August 28 will see claimants receiving their payments on Friday, August 25 instead. This applies to the following:
- Universal credit
- Child tax credits
- Working tax credits
- Child benefit
- Employment support allowance (ESA)
- Personal independence payments (PIP)
- Jobseeker’s allowance (JSA)
- Carer’s allowance
- Attendance allowance
- Pension credits
If you claim any of the benefits listed above, you do not need to do anything as your money will be paid into your account as normal on the earlier date. The amount that you receive will also not change.
However, if you usually get paid every month and you don’t receive your money on the working day before the Bank Holiday then you should contact the DWP.
The date changes will also apply to regular payments given by His Majesty’s Revenue and Customers (HMRC). These include:
- Working tax credits
- Child tax credits
- Child benefit
- Guardian’s allowance
What other changes will happen this year?
Two more Bank Holidays expected in the remainder of the year will also effect changes in benefit payment dates. These are:
- Monday, December 25 (Christmas Day) – payments due between December 25 and 27 will be given by Friday, December 22
- Tuesday, December 26 (Boxing Day) – payments due between December 25 and 27 will be given by Friday, December 22
