Mr Sunak and his wife have a combined net worth of about £529 million, in large part thanks to Ms Murthy’s shares in Infosys, her father’s IT empire.
Earlier this month, Sir Keir used PMQs to highlight an interview Mr Sunak did when he was young, in which he said that he did not have any working-class friends.
He also told Sky News that the multi-millionaire Prime Minister was out of touch both politically and personally.
Sir Keir said: “If you compare the Prime Minister and me, when I was growing up we couldn’t pay our bills and our phone was cut off and I know the anxiety and the shame it has for families, so I know what people are going through.
“He’s a wealthy man – that’s good. I don’t knock that. But it means that he doesn’t understand. He doesn’t know the anxiety that people are going through.”
‘These things don’t bother me’
When he was asked about the personal attacks, Mr Sunak said: “I’ve set out five priorities that I believe are the priorities that matter to them, and they’ll judge me by whether I deliver for them on those things.
“I think people can see, as I’m doing the job, what is much more important than things like that are your values. And I believe my values are the same as those of the British people.
“I believe that they care about a government that wants to help them with the cost of living. I believe they want a government that is going to make sure that the NHS is there for their families when they need, which is why cutting waiting lists is important.
“I believe they want a government that’s going to stop the boats because there needs to be fairness in our migration system. Those are my values, but fundamentally it’s about delivering for them on their priorities.”
Asked whether it was “hurtful” when Sir Keir talks about his family, Mr Sunak said: “These things don’t bother me.”
