Big change to UK bank’s paid accounts gives you free weekly Greggs, railcard and breakdown cover

Who doesn’t love freebies? If you saying ‘not me’, you’re an outright liar.

Well, one UK bank has revamped its account perks so that they come with some rather impressive bonuses.

We’re talking free Greggs every week. Yes, you read that correctly.

A sausage roll on the house. Once a week, every week.

You’re not in a fever dream and the benefits don’t stop there.

You’ll also be able to benefit from free annual railcards and in the continued spirit of moving around, you can then get travel and breakdown cover.

They’re some of the biggest benefits from a brand new set of paid-for bank accounts being offered as of today (23 April).

Online bank Monzo is behind them, with three different plans up for grabs.

We’re looking at Monzo Extra at £3 a month; Monzo Perks at £7 a month; and Monzo Max from £17 a month (there’s a three month minimum sign up for this option).

Monzo said: “It’s been almost four years since we launched Monzo Plus and three years since we launched Monzo Premium. Today, we’re introducing Extra, Perks and Max – three brand new ways to upgrade your personal current account based on what’s important to you.

“Since we launched Plus and Premium all those years ago, our community of subscribers has doubled in size. We’re catering to a wider range of people now and we need our upgrade options to meet their wants and needs.

“Already got Plus or Premium? You don’t have to give up your subscription now the new plans are here. We’ll cover this in more detail later.”

Monzo Extra – £3 a month

The cheapest plan that comes with the fewest benefits (that shouldn’t come as a surprise, really).

Here’s what you get:

Custom spending categories

This is meant to help you understand where your cash goes.

It can help you reflect on what you’re spending so you can make changes if you so wish (or just keep going as you are).

Virtual cards

Allows you to create and delete extra cards for budgeting and security.

It’ll update in real-time and keep a record of what you’re spending, when and where.

Fee-free cash withdrawal

You can take cash out in the UK and European Economic Area. There’s no limit in this area.

A £200 a month limit exists everywhere else in the world.

Monzo Perks – £7 a month

The middle package and it comes with more perks than the Extra option.

You’ll get everything above plus the following:

Saving rate

Monzo’s best saving rate comes with this package at 4.6% AER. It’ll apply to your Instant Access Savings Post and Cash ISA.

You’ll be able to claim a free sausage roll, regular hot drink, doughnut or muffin every single week. Delightful.

If you regularly go to Greggs as it is, you’re automatically saving cash over the course of a month.

Annual railcard

Offered by Trainline, it’ll let you save one-third or more on eligible train journeys. A must-have saving if you commute, really.

Monzo Max – from £17 a month

As we said above, this option comes with a minimum three-month sign up period.

It offers you everything you see above with a few other very handy perks:

Worldwide phone insurance

It’ll mean that if you lose your phone, have it stolen, or accidentally damage it – including the dreaded cracked screen – you’ll be covered.

It’s on phones worth up to £2,000 as well as accessories valued up to £200 (headphones, chargers). There’s an excess of £75 on any claim.
