Barclays to shut 9 bank branches today in blow for UK high street – see full list

Barclays is set to shut another nine branches today, in another blow for customers who rely on face-to-face banking.

The banking giant will close six sites in England, one in Scotland, one in Wales and one in Northern Ireland. Another branch in Leiston was due to close today but Barclays has decided to keep it open for now. These new closures are part of the 99 bank closures Barclays confirmed earlier this year that will take place in 2024, on top of a further 22 branches that will shut for good in 2025.




If you need to speak to someone in person about a banking query, Barclays customers do have several options available. You can book an appointment at one of the 200 “pop-up” banks Barclays runs, which are located in spaces such as community centres, libraries and business hubs.

However, the Barclays “pop-up” locations don’t offer cash or counter services. Barclays customers can pay in cash and cheques, check their balance and withdraw cash at their nearest Post Office. It comes as Which? today revealed banks have shut more than 6,000 branches since 2015.

This equates to over 60% of the bank branches network since Which? started tracking closures. The usual reason for bank branches is the rise in customers using digital services however, Which? says there remains “a significant number of people who are not yet ready or willing to make that jump”.

Which? noted that despite the introduction of various alternatives to bank branches across the country, such as enhanced Post Offices and banking hubs, the rollout is progressing too slowly. Currently, just 50 of the 130 recommended banking hub locations have opened.

Sam Richardson, Deputy Editor of Which? Money, said: “This milestone of more than 6,000 bank branch closures in just nine years underscores the seismic shift that has taken place in terms of our banking habits and the character of the British high street. While some may hardly notice the closure of their local branch as they seamlessly switch to online banking, for others reliant on face-to-face services, the impact can be disastrous.

“It’s not about halting closures altogether, but ensuring that essential banking services remain accessible to those who still rely on them. It is crucial that the government prioritises opening more hubs quickly so that people aren’t left behind.”
