Over the last decade, more and more banks have announced branch closures as people choose to do their banking online and since 2015 around 6,000 branches have shut their doors for good
Barclays has announced it will shut another 20 bank branches over the next two years.
The closures in this announcement today will start from April this year and will continue into next year, in another blow to the British high street. It follows the 18 branch closures the high street bank announced last month. The first raft of closures from this announcement will happen on April 11 and the places which will lose their Barclay’s branches on these days include Burton-on-Trent – , Ely, and Forest Gate.
In a statement on the closures, Barclays said: “As visits to branches continue to fall, we need to adapt to provide the best service for all our customers. Where there is no longer enough demand to support a branch, we maintain an in-person presence through our Barclays Local network, live in over 300 locations, based in libraries, town halls, mobile vans and our banking pods.
“We also support access to cash with our cashback without purchase service, 24-hour deposit-taking ATMs and by working alongside the Post Office and Cash Access UK.”
Over the last decade, more and more banks have announced branch closures as people choose to do their banking online. The consumer group Which? estimates that banks and building societies have closed, or have scheduled to close, nearly 6,000 high street branches since January 2015 – this works out to around 54 branches each month.
Over the last few years, Barclays has announced nearly 200 branch closures with the reason behind them being the reduced usage of the service. Barclays says that only 10% of transactions were now taking place face-to-face.
