Barclays announces 20 more branches to close – full list and dates

Barclays has announced plans to close another 20 branches across the UK, with closures in England, Wales and Scotland starting in April. The bank has previously said just 10% of transactions now take place in branches and it has recently closed around 200 branches.

There are now around 400 branches of Barclays left across the country. A Barclays spokesperson said: “As visits to branches continue to fall, we need to adapt to provide the best service for all our customers. Where there is no longer enough demand to support a branch, we maintain an in-person presence though our Barclays Local network, live in over 300 locations, based in libraries, town halls, mobile vans and our banking pods.

“We also support access to cash with our cashback without purchase service, 24-hour deposit-taking ATMs and by working alongside the Post Office and Cash Access UK.”

Barclays closed 185 branches last year.

Barclays announced 18 closures in Decemnber and five more earlier this month while Lloyds announced at the end of last year it is closing 22 Halifax branches, 19 Lloyds branches and four Bank of Scotland.

NatWest Group said it plans to shut another 19 branches, mostly in the early part of this year. More than 600 bank branbches closed in 2023 across the country.

Consumer group Which? said banking customers are being “left on a cliff-edge” by the swathes of banking closures and called for a faster rollout of community banking hubs.

Jenny Ross, Which? money editor, said: “These closures are yet another nail in the coffin for the UK’s high street banking infrastructure and will see some towns lose more than one bank within a matter of days or weeks – suggesting little thought has been given to the impact on the communities they serve.

“With more than 170 branches already due to close in 2024, on top of the 5,783 branches that have closed since January 2015, consumers are being left on a cliff-edge as in-person banking services are axed from their communities.”

She added: “Banking hubs could play an important role in this, but the rollout is taking far too long and more hubs must open as soon as possible to stop millions of consumers being left behind.”
