It used to be much harder to get to the bank before it closed—so much so, that the term “banker’s hours” was used to refer to a short working day. Now, not only are banks typically open during regular business hours, but some are even open on the weekend.

While it can be hard to find banks that are open on Sundays, there are a handful, albeit with limited hours. If it’s Sunday and you have transactions that require in-person assistance, the banks on our list may be able to help you.

Are Banks Open on Sunday?

Banks are typically closed on Sunday because the financial system—including the stock market and the Federal Reserve’s settlement system for processing ACH payments—is closed for business on the weekends. But in recent years, it’s become more common for banks to be open on weekends. According to a 2016 J.D. Power and Associates survey cited by the Consumer Bankers Association, 75% of bank customers said that their primary bank was open on Saturdays. However, it’s still rare for banks to be open on Sunday.

That said, some banks now offer limited Sunday hours as a convenience for customers who can’t get their banking done during the week. Depending on where you have a bank account and what kind of banking issue or transaction you’re trying to handle, going to a bank branch on Sunday might be possible.

Banks and Credit Unions That Are Open on Sunday

The banks and credit unions on this list are open on Sunday but might only be open for a few hours, and federal holidays might also affect the hours of U.S. banks open on Sunday. Be sure to check your mobile banking app, bank website, local search results or call ahead to ensure the branch you want to visit is open before you go.

Tips for Banking on Sundays

If you need to take care of banking business on a non-business day, start by seeing if you can do what you need to do via the bank’s website or mobile app. See if you can deposit your check via mobile deposit, get an answer to your question via online FAQs, or contact customer service online or by phone.

If you must meet with someone in person on Sunday, look up bank branches within driving distance and to see if any have Sunday hours. Call ahead to double-check with the branch. If you have a complex problem or special situation, such as needing to have a document notarized, needing to deposit a large check or withdraw a large amount of cash, or trying to schedule a wire transfer, be sure to bring any necessary forms of photo identification.

If your bank is closed on Sunday, see if it offers any in-store branches at grocery stores near you that might offer extended hours. If your credit union is closed on Sundays, see if it takes part in shared branch banking, and check to see if any shared branches are open near you.

Keep in mind that if you’re trying to pay a bill, make a deposit or cash a check, your transaction won’t clear on Sunday. Make sure you’re aware of any due dates, deadlines and late fees that might be affected by last-minute banking on Sunday. Just because the bank branch is open on Sundays, doesn’t mean your transaction will go through on Sunday.
