Ukraine, Prime Minister Shmyhal: “Grateful to the EU for the support, now invest in defense”

Ukraine “did not ask for troops and is very grateful to the European Union and its partners for training tens of thousands of soldiers in Europe. The Ukrainian Prime Minister, Denys Shmyhal, said this in an interview with the newspaper “El Pais”, explaining how it has “become clear that we need to increase military production, armaments and invest more in high technologies”. “We propose to our European partners to send trainers to Ukrainian territory, to speed up this process, as it would facilitate logistics and communication,” highlighted Shmyhal, saying he was “certain” that French President Emmanuel Macron’s proposal referred “to this type of cooperation”.

“No European country agrees to send soldiers to the battlefield, because this would mean going to war and we are all absolutely aware that this is impossible at the moment. But the support of our Western partners is fundamental,” continued the Kiev prime minister.

According to Shmyhal, the time has come for European politicians to understand that Russia “is a cruel, barbaric, aggressor and terrorist country, which will not stop at Ukraine and Europe is part of its strategy.” For this reason “it has become clear that we need to increase military production, armaments and invest more in high technologies – he concluded -. We are waiting and asking our partners to send us long- and medium-range missiles. They are essential, no less important than the supply of artillery shells. We have assured that we will not use these missiles for attacks on Russian territory.”
