Wells Fargo, Bank of America, US Bank, Citizens, TD and KeyBank among those that file to shut 139 bank branches in January alone – is YOURS affected?

US banks filed to close 37 branches in a single week last month, with Bank of America, TD Bank and KeyBank together responsible for more than two-thirds.

Bank of America has emerged as a front-runner in the ongoing elimination of costly brick-and-mortar banking locations in the US.

It said it would shut almost 160 last year and having already announced 30 in the first month of 2024 alone, there are no signs the trend will slow.

A total of 139 scheduled bank branch closures were made public in January – more than the monthly average across 2023, according to their regulator. In another week last month, American banks said they would shut 41.

A spokesperson for TD Bank told DailyMail.com that although it notified its regulator of ten closures last month, they will not take effect until April. Its customers will still therefore be able to access those branches until then.

The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) must be notified each time a bank wants to shut or open a branch, and DailyMail.com has seen the latest details of closures for the week of anuary 21 to 27. 

Canadian Toronto-Dominion (TD) – with around 1,100 branches across 16 states on the East Coast – filed to close nine locations. Last year it only notified its regulator of a single closure.

The branches scheduled to be shut are in Florida, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia and Washington DC.

KeyBank, which has almost 1,000 branches in the Northwest and Northeast, said it would also close eight that week. Half of those were in Washington State between Seattle, Tacoma and Everett.

Other banks to have notified of closures that week include Fulton, Citizens, Farmer’s National Bank, Community Bank and Wells Fargo. 

In a statement to DailyMail.com, the OCC said: ‘The OCC understands the importance of bank branches and is committed to supporting access to banking services in all communities.’

The watchdog also noted that although banks and credit unions need to notify the ‘primary regulator of closures’, the statute that requires them to do so does not allow the regulator to object.

A spokesperson for Bank of America told DailyMail.com that it was closing certain branches in response to diminishing customer traffic.

KeyBank, which has almost 1,000 branches in the Northwest and Northeast, said it would also close eight in the week between January 21 and January 27

‘What we’re seeing across the industry is that our clients are using digital banking for more of their everyday needs,’ they said.

‘They only come into our financial centers when they want to have a conversation about their finances or something that’s a little more complex.’ 

As the habits of consumers are changing, so too are the way banks are set out, said the spokesperson.

In the past Bank of America branches were arranged in such that the teller line was at the front. That line is now often at the back of the branch to make space for customers to meet with bank employees privately nearer to the entrance.
