A Channel 5 documentary has highlighted the charity work of Captain Sir Tom Moore before delving into where the funds raised have gone after his death in February 2021
Viewers of Channel 5’s ‘Captain Tom: Where Did The Money Go?’ have been left fuming as they call out the charity as ‘a scam’.
The documentary looked back at how the large amount of money donated by the British public to Captain Sir Tom Moore during the pandemic and after was used, after the veteran raised nearly £40million for the NHS. Captain Sir Tom Moore became a global phenomenon during the pandemic after his determination to walk 100 laps of his garden before his 100th birthday gathered global support and praise. He was knighted by the late Queen, won a Pride of Britain award and even reached Number 1 in the charts
After completing his charitable feats, his books were snapped up by those wishing to support his charity endeavours, yet now there are huge questions that have never been answered over where the profits from the book sales went. At the time, records indicated that £800k from sales was put into a private company by Captain Sir Tom’s family.
The documentary aims to show the money trail and uncover where the funds went, which has left viewers outraged. Writing on Twitter/X, one viewer shared: “I never bought into they hype of #captaintom the first time I saw his daughter on tv I didn’t like her. It always felt she was wheeling him out for interviews just for her own sake.”
Another agreed, as they shared: “Do any of you who questioned it from early on feel kind of vindicated about this #captaintom thing?. The s*** you’d get from people for just daring to question it at the time was ridiculous . The grifting started early.”
“The more I read and heard about them, the more dodgy the family of #CaptainTom became,” wrote a third. Another shared: “The right scam at the right time and the majority were taken in by it.”
Another viewer warned: “Always though Hannah was a wrong ‘un from day one. Moral of the story – always trust your instincts.”.
The documentary also looks at what Captain Tom’s daughter and her husband did with the funds raised after his sad death in February 2021. In one clip,, Hannah Ingram-Moore and her husband Colin also admitted to keeping £800,000 from the sales of her father’s books. In tears, Hannah said she kept money raised from three books her inspirational father had written. In a Talk interview with Piers Morgan, she explained he wanted his family to keep the money from the books in Club Nook Ltd rather than the Captain Tom Foundation charity.
She told Piers: “These were my father’s books, and it was honestly such a joy for him to write them, but they were his books. He had an agent and they worked on that deal, and his wishes were that that money would sit in Club Nook, and in the end . . . ” “For you to keep?” Piers interjected as she clarified: “Yes. Specifically.” The family told Piers that they believed that anyone buying the books had no reason to think they were donating to charity.
