HELPING HAND: Gerrards Cross resident raises funds for friend’s life-saving treatment

A woman from Gerrards Cross is raising funds for life-saving treatment for a friend she met while living in Dubai.

Before moving to Gerrards Cross, Naomi and her family lived in Dubai. It is here that she met Roshani, a Sri Lankan nurse who was looking for employment.

Naomi invited Roshani to move into her home and assisted her with job applications and interviews.

Naomi said of Roshani: “She is the loveliest, warmest and kindest woman you could ever meet.”

Roshani eventually found employment and moved in with a family to work as their nanny and maid. Naomi and her family moved back to the UK, but she still kept in touch with Roshani.

When Roshani told Naomi that she had been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia, an aggressive form of bone marrow cancer, in June, Naomi wanted to do all she could to help.

Roshani is just 33 years old and is the sole earning member of her family. She was hospitalised in Sri Lanka for initial treatment, but due to political unrest and poor medical facilities, was forced to go to Mumbai, India, for treatment.

Doctors say Roshani needs a bone marrow transplant, a highly expensive procedure.

Naomi launched a fundraiser to raise the required funds, and has so far raised nearly £9,000.

She said: “Living in the UK, we are so privileged to have the NHS. Back in Dubai, Roshani earned just enough to survive and sent everything else to her family in Sri Lanka. She is desperate for financial support; it really is a matter of life or death for her.”
