Watford Council is excited to announce the launch of the #WorthSaving campaign aimed at helping residents to save money by reducing edible food waste.

The #WorthSaving campaign is an effort to combat food waste, an issue that has both environmental and economic implications. In the UK, households throw away approximately 9.5 million tonnes of food every year, contributing to increased greenhouse gas emissions and unnecessary financial strain on families.

Along with our environmental partners Veolia, Watford Council will work to:

  • Provide residents with practical tips and strategies to reduce edible food waste, potentially saving them up to £720 per year.
  • Encourage residents to sign-up for the newsletter will which will give them informative content, including how-to guides, recipes, and best practices to minimise food waste, including the four steps to save.
  • Through the #WorthSaving campaign, foster a sense of community around the campaign’s mission by residents sharing their success stories and participate in local events.
  • Collectively reduce food waste, asking residents to contribute to the reduction in greenhouse gases and the amount of edible food being thrown away.

Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, said: “Food waste is a challenge that affects us all, from both an environmental and economic standpoint. By partnering with the Herts WasteAware Partnership, with this campaign, along with our environmental partners Veolia, we aim to engage residents in ways to address this issue collectively. Together we can make a real impact on reducing food waste in our community.”

Darren Harding, Senior Contract Manager, Veolia said, “We are very happy to be supporting such an important campaign here in Watford. Food waste is a big issue, both environmentally and economically. We would like to encourage all residents to sign up to this newsletter which will provide practical tips on how to reduce food waste”
