All eyes over the coming week will be on the latest UK consumer price data, which may hold the key as to how Bank will proceed when policymakers next meet in September.
Regardless of market swap pricing, recent remarks from several Monetary Policy Committee pointed to the possibility that rate hikes might now be in the rear view mirror, said Michael Hewson, chief market analyst at CMC Markets UK.
Indeed, headline CPI was seen falling from 7.9% for June to 6.7% in July, as the energy price cap reduction was reflected in headline inflation.
The CPI data would be published on Wednesday.
Wage data due out the day before on the other hand was expected to show that the year-on-year rate of increase in average weekly earnings ticked higher over the last three months from 7.3% to 7.4% – a fresh record.
Hewson nevertheless believed that wages were peaking.
In the background, July retail sales numbers in the States would give investors insights into the health of the American consumer.
Regional Fed survey results due out on Tuesday and Thursday would also be closely watched, as would the latest weekly jobless claims numbers.
So too the results of U.S. Treasury bill auctions scheduled for Monday and the minutes of the Federal Reserve’s last policy meeting on Wednesday.
In Asia, Tuesday would be the big day, with key activity indicators for the month of July due out in the People’s Republic of China.
They would be followed the next day by the latest policy decision from rate-setters in New Zealand.
At the end of the week, the Office for National Statistics would publish data for UK retail sales in July and Eurostat for euro area consumer prices in July.
Also worth keeping tabs on would the ZEW Institute’s economic confidence gauge for Germany covering the month of August, on Tuesday.
