Trump’s proposed tariffs would hurt U.S. economy.

For those who care about the economy, ex-President Donald Trump has favored increasing tariffs on Chinese imports and imports from other places (“What did Trump say in his RNC speech? Here are the highlights and lowlights.” July 19).

Virtually all economists agree that this would be a terrible economic policy. The tariffs would cause foreign goods to be sold here at increased prices to consumers of those products, whether individuals or corporations. This would cause enhanced inflation, which is definitely what we do not need.

Trump has now indicated that in addition to decreasing aid to Ukraine, he wants Taiwan (from which we get a large amount of trade, including chips, tech material, and so forth) to pay more for its defense. This indicates that the United States may not come to the aid in the event of a Chinese invasion. This would also have a terrible economic impact. This is why the stock market, in particular the tech-heavy Nasdaq, plummeted on Wednesday.

If this is Trump’s idea of good economic policy, then the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School ought to revoke his diploma.
