Will there be a Bank Holiday if England win the Euros? Latest on potential UK day off after Euro 2024 final vs. Spain

England face off with Spain in the final of Euro 2024 in Berlin on July 14.

Gareth Southgate’s side have dug deep in the knockout stages of Euro 2024 to force their way into the final against the talented Spanish.

England fans have seen their levels of expectation rocket up ahead of the final with the country ready to come to a standstill for the final showdown.

With the game — and potential celebrations — expected to run long into Sunday night, some supporters are calling on the UK Government to confirm a nationwide Bank Holiday for Monday July 15.

Will there be a bank holiday if England win the Euros?

This is the question on the minds of many England fans ahead of the Euro 2024 final.

However, the new UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has been non-committal over the idea of an extra day off.

Starmer has only been in power for just over a week, and despite calling for a Bank Holiday if England won the Women’s World Cup in 2023 during his time in political opposition, he is less firm this time.

“I went to the last Euros finals. I don’t want to go through that again so I don’t want to jinx anything,” he said at the United Nations summit in Washington D.C..

“We must mark it in some way but the most important thing is getting it over the line on Sunday.”

He also backed a Bank Holiday after England Women won the Euros in 2022.

However, the Conservatives ruled it out due to the “considerable” cost. According to a 2010 House of Commons Library briefing, the government put the cost of an additional bank holiday at £2.9bn.

Starmer’s response indicates there is unlikely to be a last minute change to the UK calendar with the majority of domestic Bank Holidays also applying to Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland, with the latter’s side dropping out of Euro 2024 at the group stages.

In some good news for fans though, the government has allowed pubs to extend their opening hours by an extra two hours to 1 a.m. BST in England and Scotland.
